The Benefits of Being Single

Jess was recently interviewed - about the benefits of being single and why more people are opting to forgo relationships. Check out the notes below.

Based on your experience, how common is it that people in their late 20s/ early-to-mid 30s have never been in a relationship?

It’s common for folks in their 20s and becomes less common into their 30s. However, it’s important to note that folks of all ages may opt-out of relationships. I know some 60-somethings who are perfectly happy living on their own or with a friend. Not everyone desires romance (or sex), and that’s perfectly fine.

It’s also worth noting that many folks who get divorced or lose a partner also prefer to stay single. They have multiple sources of social interaction, support, and intimacy without a romantic partner. We tend to assume that romantic relationships are the most fulfilling, but this isn’t necessarily the case. You can have intimate relationships with friends,...

Dating Red Flags

Jess joined Jeff and Carolyn on Global TV’s The Morning Show to talk about red flags and more when it comes to dating. Check out her notes and the video interview below.

A survey of 2000 folks finds that nearly half of men and a quarter of women would break up or end a date early because of their partner’s food habits — even if they have the same annoying habits themselves. But are bad table manners a red flag or, are we being too picky?

Jess, is it fair to end a date early over bad table manners, and are people doing this?

You might be too picky if you walk out over table manners because table manners are highly subjective (culture, age, etc.). I wouldn’t cut someone off right away unless their manners really do offend your sense of identity or if you actually can’t handle it as a sensitive eater.

You mention manners varying by age and culture — what did this survey find in terms of age differences?

How To Deal With Social Burnout

Back to work? Or back to school? Are you feeling burned out? Jess chimed in on Global TV’s The Morning Show to talk about signs of social burnout and strategies for managing it — for folks of all social persuasions. Check out her notes and the video interview below.

What is social burnout? Why does it happen?

Social burnout and social fatigue are valid experiences, even if they’re not formal diagnoses. Burnout often occurs when you’ve socialized to the point that you feel you can’t do it anymore. And you might notice a range of emotional and physical responses that signal that you’ve had enough.

What are some signs that you’re socially exhausted or burnt out?

Signs can vary greatly. For some people, you might feel drained, tired, stressed, or irritable. Some people get overwhelmed with a dislike for everything and everyone around them. For others, everything might feel pointless or boring. And you start zoning out. You might have physical...

Tips For Back To Work Anxiety And More

For many people returning to work, anxiety levels are increasing. Jess sat down with Jeff & Cheryl Hickey on Global TV's The Morning Show to share tips for managing anxiety. They discuss what it means for hybrid teams, couples, and more.

Check out her notes and the video interview below.

If you’re feeling anxious about heading back to the office, how can you soothe your own anxiety?

Workplace-related anxiety is common during non-pandemic times with around 50% reporting that stress and anxiety affect their performance, their relationships with coworkers, and the quality of their work. Add the transition from remote work to in-person work in the midst of a pandemic and it’s no surprise that folks are experiencing anxiety that spills over in our personal lives. 70% report that workplace stress affects our relationships at home and physical symptoms are also common, so that’s where I suggest you start — with the physical.

What do you...

Post-Pandemic Dating Advice

As more cities and provinces across the country are reopening and vaccination rates are increasing, we’re seeing a gradual return to normalcy from coast to coast. But what does this mean for relationships? A good deal has changed over the past 16 months — especially the way we connect in relationships, so I joined The Morning Show team to discuss my predictions for post-pandemic love.

Check out the video and summary below.

Is there going to be a massive onslaught of dating as many people as you can?

I’m hearing a mix. I know some people south of the border who are doing all they can to get out and date. But I also hear from others, who despite being fully vaccinated and having the freedom to do as they please. They are just not ready to dive in head first. We didn’t get to transition into this pandemic in Canada. We were just told to stay home and stop going to work & school in March 2020; but we can choose to more gradually transition back to the new...

When Your Partner Refuses To Go To Therapy (And other viewer Qs)

How do you talk to that friend who's breaking COVID rules? What do you do if your partner refuses to go to couples' counselling? Jess dives into these topics on Global TV's The Morning Show. Check out her notes and video interview below!

How to deal with friends who don’t agree on safety protocols as we lockdown for the 4058209384234th time?

The reality is that we have science, we have memes and, evidence-based research that doesn’t always fit into an easily shareable meme. And while memes can be a great way to distill and share information, they can also spread misinformation on all sides.

If you don’t agree, it’s okay, but you have to respect their boundaries. This means not taking their behaviour personally. If they’re not comfortable meeting indoors for dinner, don’t tell yourself the story that they’re not prioritizing you. They’re prioritizing their own comfort, their own mental and physical health. If they’re getting...

Tips For Successful Online Dating

Have you ever wondered how you could improve your presence in the online dating scene? Have you thought about what does and doesn't work? Jess joins Carolyn and Jeff on Global TV's The Morning Show as she gives us better online dating tips. Check out her notes and the video interview below.

1. How should you approach your opening line?

We put that out to our social media community and here are the results:

  1. Use their name. Not baby, cutie, honey, sweetie, etc.
  2. Demonstrate that you’ve actually read their profile, so start the conversation with something from their bio.
  3. Normal conversation like “How’s your week going?”. No gimmicks.
  4. Joke around. e.g. Pick one: Compliment. Dad Joke. I Roast You.

2. What should you avoid?

  • Do not copy and paste as though you’re shooting fish in a barrel, because you’re not. This is the wide ocean of online dating.
  • Don’t start with sexual come-ons or assume that you’re entitled to their...

Online Dating Red Flags to Look Out For

This morning on Global TV's The Morning Show, Jess chats with Carolyn and Jeff about a few online dating red flags we should be mindful of. Check out her notes and video interview below!

1. Red flag number one - they seem too good to be true.

Too good to be true: If their online persona doesn’t align with what they’ve told you, you might want to ask a few more questions before proceeding. If you’re chatting with someone whose life seems unrealistic or too good to be true, it may be a red flag. A client just told me that she was dating a guy online for three months, but when she went to meet him in his city, he insisted they stay at a hotel; apparently he had donated his big beautiful house to help out a family who had lost theirs in a fire. When they met in another city a few months later, he would disappear for work engagements around dinner and bedtime and reappear later in the night. When she came back to his city, he had another story about why they...

7 Ways To Spice Up Your Love & Sex Life

Want to spice up your relationship? Jess shares a few practical tips with Carolyn and Jeff on Global TV's The Morning Show. Check them out below!

1. Let's start small - reminiscing can be an easy way to help bring back those feelings you once felt.

Reminisce. Retell the story of how you met or chat about your first date — to one another, to your kids or to a friend. Talk about how you felt, what made you nervous, your first impressions and anything else that comes to mind. When you recall happy and exciting experiences, it can help to reinvigorate those feelings.

2. This seems like the opposite of what we're trying to do Jess, but you say to ban sex for a week...

Ban sex for a week. It might seem counterintuitive, but you can have fun enticing and teasing one another in every way possible while you wait for the big day to arrive. Building anticipation is the key to pleasure. People often ask about scheduling sex and complain that it’s boring or dry, but if you can...
